THE WEEK 3 - POOL 5: GIS AND SALINITY INTRUSION

On November 4th – 6th was the third QGIS training at Can Tho University (Pool 5). Multiple trainers from Can Tho University worked together with two Dutch trainers to introduce all participants to multiple new skills and tricks in QGIS.

One of the main issues in the Mekong Delta is salinity intrusion. Salinity intrusion, caused by e.g. droughts, sea-level rise and low river discharges, will affect the freshwater supply in the Mekong Delta and can have severe consequences.

During this training, the different modules focused on the topic of salinity intrusion.

First, the participants were introduced to working with gridded information in QGIS.

Then, participants were shown how they can use gridded information to identify possible new locations for salt intrusion measuring points along the river. The potential new measuring locations were based on multiple criteria. For example, it should be located in the river, preferably not too far from agricultural land, and one should be able to access it (so not too far from roads).

On the last day, participants were shown how to visualize time-varying point observations in QGIS and we had a fruitful discussion on the timing of sowing/harvesting.

In total about 25 participants participated this training week and we hope everyone had a good and fruitful time!
